Discipline Your Child

While some parents are not comfortable in the disciplinary role, order in a family must be preserved for all to survive. Lets take a look at some of the common methods of disciplining children and see how they really work.

1. Spanking.
While most parents have experienced the urge to spank children, and many have resorted to spanking their kids, there are problems with this form of discipline. Spanking may give children a clear message about the unacceptability of their behavior and sometimes stops the behavior in the short run. However, in the long run, it teaches children that it is all right to hit, and that it is all right to be hit. Even children are confused by the irony of the statement, "This spanking will teach you not to hit your brother."

2. Time-outs.
Giving children a short time-out can give them the chance to reflect on their behavior, and also a clear message that a certain behavior won't be allowed. This can be an effective method of teaching. Time-outs can also give an angry, frustrated parent a chance to calm down and respond more rationally. It is suggested that a child be given a time out equal in minutes to her age (a four-minute time out for a four-year-old child). It is not recommended to use time-outs with children under the age of three.

The problem with time-outs is that they take a child away from a valuable learning experience. A child who hits another child can begin to learn empathy from watching the other's child's response to being hurt, and if he stays around, he may also be able to participate in helping the other child feel better.

Word of Wisdom

The good life is inspired by love and guided by knowledge.

The purpose of life is to become happy. The purpose of life is to challenge and triumph over the darkness of misery.

If you want to build a happy life, you have to give careful thought to the foundations. Happiness certainly cannot be secured on appearances or affectation. Happiness comes down to the inner state of our life at a given moment.

Genuine happiness is found in courage. Courage is the gateway to happiness.

A sense of duty is useful in work, but offensive in personal relations. People wish to be liked, not be endured with patient resignation.

For everything there is a season,
And a time for every matter under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to seek, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to throw away;
A time to tear, and a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate,
A time for war, and a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you for the part of me that you bring out.

Reality is harsh. It can be cruel and ugly. Yet no matter how much we grieve over our environment and circumstances nothing will change. What is important is not to be defeated, to forge ahead bravely. If we do this, a path will open before us.

As long as we are alive we will experience sufferings. But that does not mean we have to be unhappy. Unhappiness comes from allowing ourselves to be controlled by life's ups and downs-from feeling defeated, from losing hope, losing courage, losing the will to advance.

It is impossible to build one's own happiness on the unhappiness of others. This perspective is at the heart of Buddhist teachings.

One cannot expect to become happy without hardship or effort. Because we challenge ourselves we become strong. To become strong is to become happy.

Poverty is nothing to be ashamed of. What's disgraceful is to have an impoverished heart or to live dishonestly. Being born in a stately mansion is no guarantee of happiness, any more than being born in a shack dooms one to misery.

Beautiful Friday

Today, daddy brought mummy and baby for outing...bonding time with little precious! heheh... We had lots of fun. Thanks daddy for the pleasure. :)

Wish y'all had a wonderful Friday as well & Happy Labour Day folks!

How your baby's growing @ 2 months week 3:

He's no Fred Astaire yet, but your little one's movements are getting a bit more coordinated. You'll notice that the jerky arm and leg movements of his newborn days have given way to smoother, more circular motions, especially when he's watching people.

Give your baby enough space to stretch and move his arms and legs. Lay a blanket on the floor and let him move as he pleases. These movements can help your baby strengthen and tone his developing muscles. On his tummy, he'll start to push off with his legs — the first step in getting ready to crawl.

This Month We Love

He is 80 days old.

This baby gear (from Fisher Price) has been my little baby's favorite item at them moment (apart from my breast of course!). He is loving this chair ever since his daddy bought it and he enjoys seating in it while playing. He even take a nap in it. This chair is amazing and has been a savior to everyone at home (especially daddy coz he doesn't have to carry him for too long).

I still remember that day right after my confinement period, his daddy gave me a call saying that he has bought a surprise for our little darling from Robinson. At first, I thought baby won't really enjoy seating in it but I guess I was wrong. He loves it (the music, the rocking, vibration, the toys, the colours...)!!! :)

I highly recommend it to those parents who have a cranky baby at home. Below are some info on this product:

It starts out as an infant seat or rocker with a low-profile frame, very appropriate for newborns. Then, as your child grows, you can easily convert this portable rocker to an infant seat to add interactive toy play. Then, make it a toddler rocker. Flip out the kickstand to convert it from a rocker to a stationary seat for older babies or toddlers. The Newborn-to-Toddler Portable Rocker folds easily and has a built-in handle, so it can go wherever you and baby do! Requires 1 “D” alkaline battery (not included). Rocker includes 2 button-cell batteries for dog toy.

Maximum Weight: 40 lbs. (18 kg)

Developmental Guidelines: Use the portable rocker’s upright position only when your child has developed enough upper body control to sit without leaning forward.

Magic Touch

He is 79 days old.

Today, my little precious accompany me shopping...Guess what! He has been out with us for more than 5 hrs (!!). First time he could made it till so long. :)

First, we went to Ikano for his bed sheet and then do lunch, then to BV for tea break and to run some errands, & finally to BSC for dinner (this part was last min decision) since we saw him sleeping peacefully when we left BV and so we took the opportunity to fill our stomach since it was around our dinner time. But the clumsy daddy bang the car door so loud scaring my little darling thus woke him up at the parking lot as we reached BSC!!! (>_<)

Of course, as predicted he was very cranky when we were in BSC coz I think by that time we brought him there, he already reached his limit of friendliness or shall I say patient! (>_<") So sorry dear, mummy & daddy have to had our dinner before we head home coz by the time we are home daddy will be too tired to cook.

At night, he was very cranky and started crying after my mom called... I duno what makes him so upset... He started to chew his hand vigorously (still feeling very cranky)... We then brought him upstairs to our room so that he will feel cooler (air-con was on) and less sweaty. Still he was feeling very upset with his gum... kept on biting his fingers!!

Then, I asked daddy to bring the pacifier to him. Amazingly, he stopped crying as we put the pacifier into his mouth... Still he was feeling unstable... as he hold his fingers to my index finger and we both lying in the bed side-by-side... Eventually, both of us doze off. This was amazing, he self soothe himself to sleep in bed by himself WITHOUT having us to carry & soothe him to sleep! :D

How I wish this could happen every nite... :P

Poor Baby

He is 77 days old.

Today was a very upsetting day for my baby. First, he got poked by his pediatrician at his thigh, followed by some liquid medicine (bitter) through the mouth.

Then, mummy accidentally knocked his head during lunch time at the dining table at a Japanese restaurant. After that, daddy accidentally clipped his finger (some blood were seen) while trying to cut his index finger nails before taking his evening bath. 8-p

Hmmppphhh....

Now is 9.30 p.m. and my poor baby has been sleeping for 4 hours... still counting... I guess he must has been shocked, pain, shocked again, and pain.... And now he must have been worn out... no energy to entertain his parents... Thus, sleeping is the best way to recuperate for him.

Hope he will not have any bad dreams over these incidents he encountered today... or else I will be feeling very bad.

Sweetie pie, do have a good rest... mummy & daddy love you... good nite & sweet dreams ya... :-)

Our Baby Boy!

Date: 08.02.2010

Look who I get to spend all the day (and night) with. We have the sweetest baby boy who we love and adore! Baby was born on Monday, February 8th at 7.30pm. He was 3.3kg and 52cm long and is growing every day.

My labor started with some good contractions around 3.30am and then we finally made it into the hospital around 9.30am, and baby came approximately 10 hours later. The labor actually went by pretty fast for me (even if my epidural stopped working when I was at an 8- ouch). And, within hours we were holding our precious baby... a memory that I will never forget! We are so in love with our baby.

Dear Lord,

God of Light and Truth,
thank you for giving me
a mind that can know
and a heart that can love.

Help me to keep learning every day of my life,
for all knowledge leads to you.
Let me be aware of your presence
in all things and at all times.

Encourage me when work is difficult
and when I am tempted to give up;
encourage me when my brain seems slow
and the way forward is difficult.

Grant me the grace to put my mind to use
exploring the world you have created,
confident that in you there a wisdom
that is real.

Amen.

Blessing on Bringing a Child into the Home
